Holiday Sangria

My holiday sangria, a delightful, fruity and festive beverage, perfect for  the winters and holiday season. I have made it a couple of times during this period of Christmas cheer, and it turned out to be a success, especially when entertaining on a chilly December evening. It’s a welcome change, from the usual bottle of wine, which one generally can end up serving.

I attuned it to make it a holiday drink, by adding the warmth of spices like cinnamon, star anise and ginger. The essential ingredients are of course the fresh fruits. Oranges, apples and lemons, tossed inside, along with a variation of sodas and good ol brandy. The most important component, the wine. I decided to go with a bottle of Spanish red Rioja wine. The great feature of this drink is it’s versatility, so one could even opt for a bottle of white wine.

Make a pitcher full of this sangria, and just before serving, add a few dollops of ice cubes in the glass. Fill it up, and savor this delicious and refreshing Spanish wine cocktail 😊

Ingredients:

1 bottle of Rioja or any red wine (750 ml)

3/4 cup brandy

1/4 cup Cointreau or orange liqueur

1 cup lemonade

1 can of Canada Dry cranberry ginger ale

1 cinnamon stick

1 star anise

Wedges of an orange and lemon

1 small apple, finely diced

Ice cubes, as desired

In a large pitcher, combine everything and mix well. If one likes it super chilled, put it in the refrigerator.

Just before serving, add ice cubes in a glass. Top it up with the sangria. Enjoy!
